Frequently asked questions about Invisalign
What exactly is Invisalign and how does the treatment work?
Invisalign is a system of almost invisible, removable plastic aligners. These are custom-made for your teeth and worn in a set order. Each aligner only moves the teeth a little, so that the position of the teeth gradually changes to the desired position. Planning is done digitally so that the course of treatment and the expected result can be simulated in advance.
Who is Invisalign treatment suitable for?
Invisalign is suitable for many adolescents and adults with mild to moderate malocclusions such as crowding, gaps, rotated teeth or certain forms of overbite and crossbite. It is important that the teeth and gums are healthy and that the aligners are worn reliably. Whether Invisalign is the best option in your specific case or whether another treatment would make more sense is determined after a thorough examination and diagnosis.
How often and for how long do I have to wear the Invisalign trays?
Ideally, the aligners should be worn for 20-22 hours a day to ensure that treatment goes according to plan. They are only removed when eating, drinking sugary or acidic drinks and for dental care. Depending on the initial situation, Invisalign treatment usually takes between a few months and around 18 months; we will discuss the exact duration in the individual treatment plan.
Does Invisalign treatment hurt?
As with any tooth correction, you may experience a slight feeling of pressure or tension in the first few days after inserting new aligners. This is a sign that the teeth are moving and usually subsides significantly after a few days. Compared to many fixed braces, most patients find Invisalign very comfortable as there are no brackets or wires rubbing in the mouth. If discomfort persists or is severe, we can check the situation in the practice at any time.
Can I eat, drink and speak normally with Invisalign?
When eating and drinking hot, sugary or acidic drinks, the aligners should be removed to avoid discoloration and material damage. After eating, teeth and aligners should be cleaned before reinserting the aligners. Pronunciation may feel slightly different in the first few days, but usually normalizes very quickly as the aligners fit snugly against the teeth.
How do I look after my Invisalign trays properly?
The aligners are best cleaned twice a day with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush. Aggressive toothpastes, hot water or harsh cleaning agents should be avoided as they can attack the material. In addition, special cleaning tablets or solutions can be used to reduce plaque and discoloration. Good oral hygiene is important to prevent plaque or caries from forming under the splints.
How much does an Invisalign treatment cost and does the health insurance company contribute?
The cost of Invisalign treatment depends on the complexity of the malocclusion, the duration of treatment and the extent of the planning. After examination and planning, you will receive a transparent treatment and cost plan from us. Statutory health insurance companies generally do not cover Invisalign for adults and only in exceptional cases for adolescents; private health insurance companies or supplementary insurance companies may reimburse a proportion of the costs depending on the tariff. We are happy to help you clarify possible reimbursements and offer installment payment models on request.
How does Invisalign differ from fixed braces?
Unlike fixed braces, Invisalign aligners are removable, transparent and do not require brackets or wires. This makes oral hygiene easier, protects the mucous membranes and makes the tooth correction very inconspicuous in everyday life. For some complex malocclusions, however, fixed braces may be the more stable or faster solution – in many cases, the advantages of both systems can also be combined. We will explain to you in a consultation which option makes the most sense for your initial situation.
